It’s a real shock to hear from your unwed daughter or son that a baby is on the way. It hurts like nothing you’ve probably experienced before. You will survive (yes you will). There’s embarrassment and disappointment—then anger, confusion, and guilt. Emotions are very normal. You cannot go back and change the past. From your distress, you have to look ahead.
It helps to know that you are not the first or the last parent to go through this crisis. While each situation is unique it helps to talk to others who have been through what you are going through.
There’s strength in talking to those who know what you’re feeling. Your support is here.
Though it is hard to show, now’s the time for parents to show a steadfast love, consistency, and stability to their children. You need to be there for them when they are hurting or scared. The time is now.
If you really want to help your child (and your future grandchild) now, you have to learn to accept this new and unexpected reality for what it is and embrace it along with a new set of responsibilities as both a parent and grandparent.
There’s more parents (grandparents) need to talk about. We’re here to help you as you begin a new and (yes) exciting chapter in both your life and the life of your son or daughter.
